Breastfeeding in Public and Your Rights as a UK Parent
If you’re a new mum, it’s completely normal to feel a bit shy or nervous about breastfeeding in public. You want to do what’s best for your baby, but you might worry about what others will think or if you have the right to feed your little one outside your home.
The good news? In the UK, the law is on your side- you are absolutely allowed to breastfeed a child anywhere, anytime.
The Law Protects Breastfeeding Mums
Under the Equality Act 2010, it is against the law to treat a woman unfavourably because she is breastfeeding. This means no one can legally ask you to stop feeding a child, cover up, or leave a public space like a cafe, shop, library, or on public transport.
The law protects breastfeeding mums, so you don’t have to worry about this being a criminal offence. Your baby has the right to be fed when they’re hungry, and you have every right to feed them, no matter where you are.
Practical Tips to Feel More Comfortable
Even with the law on your side, it’s normal to feel more comfortable with a few simple strategies:
- Practice at Home: Try feeding in front of a mirror to see how discreet it can be. You might find your baby covers most of what you think might be visible.
- Dress Strategically: The “two-top” method works well- wearing a vest under a loose top means you can easily access what’s needed without showing more than you want. Nursing bras with clasps can also make things easier.
- Find a Comfortable Spot: Many venues offer parent and baby rooms or breastfeeding-friendly areas. These spaces provide extra privacy if you prefer a quieter spot. Remember, you don’t have to feed your baby in a toilet- your little one deserves a clean, calm place.
- Use a Cover if You Like: Some mums feel more relaxed with a lightweight muslin cloth or nursing cover, but this is completely your choice.
- Bring a Support Buddy: Taking a partner, friend, or family member with you can make outings easier and more relaxing, helping to manage any potential negative comments.
A Small Step for You, a Big Step for All Mums
Breastfeeding in public is the most natural thing in the world- and the more visible it is, the more normal it becomes for everyone. Every time you feed your baby in public, you’re helping build a kinder, more supportive environment for all parents.
If you ever feel someone is treating you unfairly or discriminating against you for breastfeeding, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service for advice and support.
Remember, you’re doing an amazing job. Your baby needs to be fed, and you deserve to feel confident and supported wherever you go.
